What Changes Do You Want To Make in 2021?

After 2020 it’s hardly surprising that people want a change this year!

The virus and lockdowns have made many people re-think what is important to them, what their priorities are in the future.

ChangeSome just want life to return to “normal”, how it used to be, although that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Last year some people loved the extra time they were able to spend with their family, and want to do more of that.  Others not so much. Some appreciated being able to work from home, while others missed the social interaction of being at work.  Some just wanted to stay safe and remain healthy. Some realised that they want to paint, write, or have a simpler, quieter life. While others couldn’t wait to get out and about and socialise.

There are some things we can control, and some that we can’t. And if we try to change things that we can’t control we may feel frustrated, anxious, angry, or even depressed.  So it is far better to make the changes to what we can control – ourselves! Otherwise It’ll be like “banging our head against a brick wall”.

And how you handled this past year depended on the kind of person you are, your situation and your attitude to what has occurred. There is no “right” way, just some ways are easier than others.

What are your priorities? 

What is your Vision for this year?

How do you want your life to be different? Would you like to get a new job, or work less? Spend more time by yourself, or reach out to others more often? Take up a hobby or sport? Stop a habit that you don’t like doing, or go with the flow? Move accommodation or even towns, or stay where you are?  Do you need help to clarify your priorities, some coaching perhaps?

And if you have decided what you want to do, chosen your Vision, your goal, be it a “Word” for what you want this year to mean to you or you’ve set a New Year’s Resolution… HOW will you go about doing that? What do you need to set in place to help you achieve that?

“A vision without action is merely a dream.” Joel A Barker. He went on to say…. “Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

When you set your goal, it can be helpful to break it down into smaller action steps.  That way your goal is not so overwhelming. It’s much easier in ‘bite-size’ pieces.

Building a houseJust imagine for a moment you’ve decided you want to build a house…. it doesn’t get built in one day, does it?  First you need an idea (goal/vision) of the type of house you want, then you choose the best land and purchase it. Plans are drawn up, taking into account what can and can’t be utilised. A builder is chosen, a timeframe and costs set out, contracts signed etc. Work is then started, effort is put in, as piece by piece the build gets underway. Each piece fitting in with the whole, until the house is completed.  The vision is achieved.

How can you apply this to the goal you have chosen?

Here are a few simple rules to help you achieve success…

  1. Specific – Make your vision/goal specific, with a well-defined outcome
  2. Measurable – Track your progress as you go. E.g. “I will reduce 3 kilos each month”
  3. Achievable – Factor in all the resources you need.
  4. Realistic – Is your vision/goal actually realistic? E.g. If you are only 1.6 mtrs (5ft 2in) you are unlikely to be a “Tall Black”
  5. Time Frame – Setting goals that have an end date and incremental steps make it more achievable.

First decide what you want to achieve – your goal or vision.  Set an achievable end date, then set dates for each of your smaller action steps.

The reason for setting a goal and the steps needed to achieve it, is that it changes the way your brain functions around that goal!  Research has proven, that by setting out a goal and the smaller steps you need to take, you are much more likely to achieve it.
Goal setting is linked with higher motivation, self-esteem, self-confidence and autonomy. Research has shown a strong correlation between goal-setting and success. It guides us to take the right steps, at the right time and in the right way.[i]

To recap, here are some other tips to assist you….

  • Know what you want, not what you don’t want – Ask yourself “If I could only succeed, what would I do?” Clearly define your goal.
  • How will you know when you’ve achieved it? – What would you see, hear, feel, etc. And your goal needs to be measurable, either a new behaviour or some tangible steps you will take.
  • When, where, and with whom do you want it? – Is the goal just for you, or are others involved? Have a realistic time frame. Make sure you can track your progress as you go.
  • What will happen when you have achieved your goal? – Consider the consequences. Will the achievement of your goal benefit others as well? Or will it negatively impact on others?
  • Do you have the necessary resources? – Do you already possess the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, etc., or do you need to acquire them? Have you got the support you need? If not, where can you get it?
  • Be responsible – Your goal must be initiated and maintained by you.
  • Start immediately – What is the very first step you will need to take towards achieving your goal?
  • Is it timely? – Make sure you have an end date and dates for each step you will take.
